Heat, Severe Storms and Heavy Rain Possible Across Northern Iowa This Week

MASON CITY — Northern Iowa is in for an active stretch of summer weather this week, with heat, severe storm chances and periods of heavy rain all in the forecast.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Heat Advisory will be in effect Tuesday afternoon for portions of Iowa. Highs are expected to reach the low to mid 90s, with heat index values nearing 105 degrees in some areas. In Mason City, the heat index is forecast to climb into the mid 90s Tuesday afternoon.

The Weather Service is urging residents to take heat precautions, including drinking plenty of water, taking breaks in air conditioning or shade, and never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Storm chances increase Tuesday night, with the highest severe weather risk focused across northern and northwest Iowa. Forecasters say isolated severe storms are possible, mainly after sunset. The main threats will be damaging winds and large hail, while the tornado threat is considered low.

The severe weather risk becomes more widespread Wednesday. The National Weather Service has placed much of northeast Iowa under an Enhanced Risk for severe storms, meaning numerous severe storms are possible. Storms are expected to develop after 3 p.m. Wednesday, with large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and a few tornadoes all possible.

Heavy rain may also become a concern Wednesday night into Thursday. The Weather Service says showers and storms are likely Wednesday night, bringing the potential for local rainfall amounts over two inches in parts of the state. Additional showers and storms are expected to persist through much of Thursday, with thunderstorm activity increasing again Thursday afternoon.

The highest flash flooding threat is expected in southern Iowa, where soils are more saturated, but residents across northern Iowa should still watch for ponding on roads, rising streams and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Another round of severe weather is possible Thursday afternoon and evening. The highest risk Thursday is expected to shift toward southeast Iowa, but scattered showers and storms remain possible across the state.

Residents in Mason City and across northern Iowa are encouraged to stay weather aware this week, especially during the evening and overnight hours. The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive weather warnings and moving indoors if storms approach.
