Dangerous Extreme Cold Expected Across Iowa Through the Weekend

Residents across north and north-central Iowa are being urged to prepare for dangerously cold conditions as bitter Arctic air moves into the region late Thursday and lingers through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect through noon Friday, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 40 below zero late Thursday night into Friday morning. At those temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Following the warning, a Cold Weather Advisory will remain in place from noon Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday, as dangerously cold wind chills continue, though slightly less severe.

Forecasters say this will be the coldest air of the season, with the harshest conditions occurring overnight and during the early morning hours. Officials are urging residents to limit time outdoors and take extra precautions when venturing outside.

Safety recommendations include covering all exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face masks, bringing pets indoors, and keeping emergency supplies such as jumper cables, blankets, and a winter survival kit in vehicles. Travelers are also encouraged to check road conditions before heading out and to let others know their travel plans.

The extreme cold is expected to persist into the weekend, making preparation essential. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heating to ensure they remain safe during the prolonged cold spell.
