Near-Blizzard Conditions Possible in Northern Iowa as Strong Winds and Dangerous Cold Move In

DES MOINES — Residents across northern Iowa should prepare for hazardous winter weather today as strong winds, blowing snow, and sharply colder temperatures combine to create dangerous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Wind gusts are expected to increase through the afternoon and evening, reaching 40 to 50 miles per hour, with locally higher gusts possible. In areas of northern and northeastern Iowa where powdery snow is already on the ground and additional light snowfall is forecast, these strong winds could lead to near-blizzard conditions, including sharply reduced visibility and difficult travel.

The National Weather Service has issued Wind Advisories and Winter Weather Advisories for portions of the state. While additional snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively light — generally up to around one inch — officials say the combination of falling snow, existing snowpack, and strong winds poses the greatest concern.

“Significant blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions may occur at times, especially in open areas,” the weather service noted. “Travel could become dangerous, particularly this afternoon and evening.”

Road conditions in northern Iowa may still be affected by snow from earlier in the week, further increasing the risk of travel impacts as winds intensify.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later tonight as winds diminish, but the break will be brief. An arctic air mass is forecast to surge into Iowa beginning Thursday night, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season.

From Friday through the weekend, wind chills could drop to 25 to 40 degrees below zero at times. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect as forecasters express high confidence in the arrival of dangerous cold.

The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors during the coldest periods, cover exposed skin, bring pets indoors, and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.

Forecasters indicate high confidence in the strong winds today and the dangerous cold later this week, with moderate confidence in near-blizzard conditions developing in northern Iowa this afternoon and evening.

Travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions and weather updates closely as this winter storm system continues to impact the region.
