Extreme Cold Watch Issued for Much of Iowa Through Saturday Morning

An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for portions of north central, northeast, and northwest Iowa, with dangerously cold conditions expected from late Thursday night through Saturday morning.
According to forecasters, wind chills could drop as low as 30 to 40 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors. Officials warn that at those temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
Residents are urged to take precautions ahead of the cold snap. Anyone who must go outside should dress in multiple layers, including a hat, face covering, and gloves, to protect against the extreme cold. Officials also recommend keeping pets indoors as much as possible during the watch period.
Community members are encouraged to check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable to the cold. Safety reminders also include using portable heaters correctly and never operating generators or grills indoors, due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Extreme Cold Watch highlights the potential for life-threatening conditions, and residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and prepare accordingly as the bitter cold approaches.
