Weekend snowstorm could bring Iowa wind chills of 30-below

Iowa’s snowy December isn’t letting up. For the third Saturday in a row, another round of snow is in the forecast — and it could be followed by the coldest air of the season so far.
National Weather Service meteorologist Dylan Dodson says the approaching storm system should spread light to moderate snow across much of the state.
“Generally, we’re going to be seeing around one to three inches,” Dodson says, “but there could be a band in there that we could be looking at anywhere from three to five — so definitely more snowfall and much colder temperatures.”
Behind the storm, arctic air is expected to push into Iowa, sending overnight lows well below zero in the northern half of the state.
“We’re looking at low temperatures in the single digits below zero to teens below zero in northern Iowa,” Dodson says. “We could even see a few locations get near minus-20 in northwest Iowa.”
The wind will make it feel even colder, with dangerous wind chills expected to settle in across northern Iowa.
“We’re going to be seeing a pretty good area of minus-20s to even minus-30 in far northern Iowa,” Dodson says.
The deep freeze may be short-lived. After the frigid weekend, temperatures are expected to rebound next week, with highs possibly returning to the 30s and 40s by Tuesday or Wednesday.
