High Winds Could Trigger Blizzard Conditions in Iowa Overnight

A powerful wind-driven winter system is expected to move across Iowa late tonight into Wednesday morning, raising the risk of blizzard-like conditions and dangerous travel, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Forecasters say the main threat will be extreme winds capable of producing widespread blowing and drifting snow, even if new snowfall amounts are limited. Wind speeds will increase through Tuesday afternoon and evening, then peak overnight into Wednesday. Gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour are possible, especially in areas under a Winter Storm Watch. A Wind Advisory has also been issued for the southern half of the state.

While much of Iowa will avoid significant impacts through early Tuesday afternoon, conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly late tonight. In northern Iowa, rain may mix with or change to wintry precipitation, and scattered snow showers could develop. Any fresh snow combined with the high winds could sharply reduce visibility, creating near-whiteout conditions in open areas.

The worst impacts are expected late tonight through Wednesday morning, when blowing snow may make travel difficult to impossible. Rural roads and highways are likely to see the most severe visibility drops, with rapidly changing conditions and heavy drifting possible. Forecasters warn that even brief snow bursts could trigger blizzard criteria if wind and visibility thresholds are met.

Winds should gradually ease by Wednesday afternoon, but travel problems may linger where drifting is significant.

Emergency officials urge residents to prepare now and avoid unnecessary travel during the overnight and early-morning hours Wednesday. Drivers should keep a winter safety kit in their vehicles, monitor Iowa 511 for real-time road conditions, and be ready for sudden visibility drops.
