Blizzard Conditions Possible in Iowa Tuesday Night Into Wednesday

The National Weather Service is warning Iowans to prepare for potentially dangerous travel conditions as a powerful storm system moves into the state Tuesday night. A Winter Storm Watch for blizzard conditions has been issued, with forecasters highlighting the risk of near white-out visibility caused by strong winds and blowing snow.
Meteorologists say wind gusts could reach 45 to 55 miles per hour or higher, creating significant blowing and drifting of existing snow. Even light snow showers could worsen visibility issues, leading to hazardous travel—especially during the Wednesday morning commute, when the worst impacts are expected.
The combination of strong crosswinds and drifting snow could make travel on both north-south and east-west roadways extremely difficult. In some areas, the National Weather Service warns travel may become “nearly impossible” due to the intensity of blowing snow.
Officials are also reminding residents to secure outdoor holiday decorations, which may be displaced or damaged by the high winds.
Iowans are urged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
