Fire Danger Index Shows High to Extreme Risk Across Iowa

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has released the latest Fire Danger Index, showing much of Iowa under high to extreme fire risk heading into the weekend.

The highest threat levels are in northwest Iowa, where conditions are extremely dry and winds are expected to increase. Central and eastern Iowa are also in the high category, with only a few pockets of lower risk in far southeastern and northeastern parts of the state.

Officials urge Iowans to use caution if planning any outdoor burning. Farmers are also being reminded to take extra precautions as harvest continues, since dry crop residue and machinery can easily spark field fires.

The Weather Service is encouraging everyone to stay alert, be aware of their surroundings, and take steps to reduce fire risks during this period of heightened danger.
